The city is located on the shores of Lake Michigan, about 300 kilometres from Illinois' capital Springfield. Chicago has a surface area of 606 km².
The name Chicago is derived from a French rendering of the native Miami-Illinois word shikaakwa for a wild relative of the onion; it is known to botanists as Allium tricoccum and more commonly as "disasters". The first known reference to the site of the current city of Chicago as "Checagou" was by Robert de LaSalle around 1679 in a memoir. Henri Joutel noted in his 1688 diary that the eponymous wild "garlic" grew abundantly in the area. According to his diary of late September 1687:
... when we arrived at the said place called "Chicagou" which, according to what we have learnt of it, was given this name because of the quantity of garlic growing in the woods in this area.
The city has had various nicknames throughout its history, such as the Windy City, Chi-Town, Second City, and City of the Big Shoulders.

City Tour 4h by small coach: Chicago has several buildings that are among the tallest in the world including the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), Amoco Building and the John Hancock Building. The Willis Tower, completed in 1973, was until March 1996 the tallest building in the world with 110 floors and 443 meters without antennas. Visit the Bukingham Fountain in Grant Park, which is a copy of the fountains of Versailles. Continuation towards superb art deco sites: Board of Trade Building in the heart of the business district, Auditorium Building, then discovery of Lake Michigan. It is so extensive (500 km long and up to 190 km wide) that it feels like the sea. Lunch of the Chicago specialty: Deep Dish pizza. Then, a beautiful architectural cruise of 1h15 allowing you to discover the city from another angle. Free return to the hotel with your metro pass. Free dinner.

Chicago has many attractions, such as the Chicago Water Tower, the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), the Hancock Building and the Navy Pier. The city is located on Lake Michigan and has beautiful shores with many beaches and parks. The Magnificent Mile is a famous stretch of "Michigan Avenue. This is still a very prestigious boulevard and has many historic buildings and 'landmarks' that set the mood. Along this 'Mile' are numerous chain stores, restaurants, hotels and museums.
